Christians have a terrible tendency to water down the Gospel. We lay claim to verses like these: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.” But when we take a closer look at the demands of the Gospel, we come to see that it’s really not that simple. The Sermon on the Mount challenges us to become “Red Letter Christians” who embrace every Word that Jesus spoke. Today’s message focuses on the words of Jesus as He raises the bar by requiring us to see that our righteousness must exceed the righteousness of the most scrupulous religious leaders of the day…otherwise, there is no hope of entering into the Kingdom of heaven.

After defining the Character of its citizens in the Beatitudes, Jesus proceeds to lay a foundation for what Kingdom citizens must BELIEVE, and how that fits in with their paradigm of the Old Testament scriptures. In today’s message, we’re challenged to assess our paradigms to ensure that they are in alignment with the Kingdom of God.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus moves from the Beatitudes (where He lays the foundation for the Character of His Disciples ), and then guarantees that if they choose to pattern their lives after Him; they WILL surely suffer persecution. From there, He segues into teaching us that Kingdom Christians who live such lives will have a radical influence and impact in the world by being salt and light.
